World’s Safest Car

Think it’s a Volvo? Think again…

It’s been a big month for Libya. First, convicted Lockerbie bomber Abdel Basset al-Megrahi was returned to the northern African nation by the new Scottish government because he’s dying of prostate cancer. Second, Brotherly Leader and Guide of the Revolution (aka Muammar Qaddafi) designed a car. Called the Saroukh el-Jamahiriya (Libyan Rocket), Qaddafi’s car seats five, has a 230-hp V6 and the nose and tail of a rocket. While different, it’s not entirely terrible. Kinda like how the 2024 Honda Civic might look. Hey Muammar, quit your day job.

Launched at a conference called the Organization of African Unity and organized by Colonel Qaddafi, the Rocket is set to be be produced in Tripoli, Libya’s capital where a factory is set to be built next month. Why is Libya building a car, and why did Col. Qaddafi design it? Safety. In response to the high numbers of people killed and injured annually on Libya’s roads, Qaddafi had to act. Says a spokeshole, “The leader spent so many hours of his valuable time thinking of an effective solution. It is the safest car produced anywhere.”

How so safe? We’re not entirely sure, the Libyan Rocket does come with airbags, an “electronic defense system” (no idea) and collapsible bumpers that supposedly help out in a crash. Somehow we don’t think Volvo’s losing any sleep. However, the spokeshole goes on to say, “The invention of the safest car in the world is proof that the Libyan revolution is built on the happiness of man.” We were wondering.

New Peugeot 508 available from 2011

We’ve heard much about the Peugeot 508 and now they offered photos and details about the model that will be on sale in Europe at the beginning of 2011.

Peugeot 508 is made on the same platform as C5 or C6 from Citroen and will have petrol and diesel engines, as: 1.6-liter VTi with 120HP linked to an electronically-controlled 6-speed manual gearbox, 1.6-liter THP turbo with 156HP with 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed automatic transmission; 112HP 1.6-liter e-HDi model with an electronically-controlled 6-speed manual transmission, 112HP 1.6-liter HDi, 140HP 2.0-liter HDi 6-speed manual, 163HP 2.0-liter HDi with 6-speed automatic and a 204HP 2.2-liter HDi with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Progress Bar on a Traffic Light

A design award has been given for a concept that would allow existing traffic lights to be retrofitted with progress bars that offer a visual representation of when the light will change.
Damjan Stanković -the designer- promotes this stoplight as an eco solution in the following ways: If you’ve got the amount of time you’ve got to stop in front of you, you can shut your engine off, wait, be calm, and turn it back on again when the time is almost up. This not only lessens the amount of gas you use sitting still, but it lessens the amount of crazy madness you have wondering if the stoplight is stuck, or just really, really long.Source

There’s a thousand instances where the ideal personal cubical could come in handy. Here’s one of them: the airport. In between flights, what do you do? Sit in some marginally comfortable seats. Lots of time in between flights, what do you do? Sleep box.
The box itself is 2mx1.4mx2.3m. The main bed is 2×0.6m, equipped with an automatic system which changes the linens (think Fifth Element.) The bed is a soft, flexible strip of polymer and pulp tissue.
